Introduction

Realized Curriculum Solutions partnered with Patterson Park Public Charter School, based in Baltimore, in 2024 when their founder and CEO, Leroy, became their math instructional coach and interventionist to increase the academic outcomes of all students in grades Pre-kindergarten through 8.

The Story of Patterson Park Public Charter School

Patterson Park Public Charter School is a charter school operating in Baltimore, Maryland for more than 20 years. Patterson Park Public Charter School is one of Baltimore City Public Schools community schools which provides wrap around services, cultural events, and community giveaways to aid their students' and their families' well-being. Patterson Park Public Charter School has built a reputation on implementing project-based and problem-based curriculum solutions to challenge and meet their students' needs.

The Challenge Patterson Park Public Charter School Faced

During the 2023-2024 academic year, Patterson Park Public Charter School's Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) scores in mathematics, for grades 3 through 8, were below their anticipated achievement levels. In fact, only 11.5% of grades 3 through 8 students received proficient scores on the MCAP Mathematics Assessment in 2024. However, their school's growth in mathematics was 62%, which is one of the highest growth rates in mathematics during the 2023-2024 in Baltimore City Public Schools. When they looked more closely at their MCAP Mathematics Assessment data based upon student demographic groups, they noticed that most of the students who did not receive proficient scores were students from underserved communities.

Why Patterson Park Public Charter School Chose Realized Curriculum Solutions

Patterson Park Public Charter School partnered with Realized Curriculum Solutions' founder and CEO, Leroy, by requesting he serve as their instructional math coach and interventionist to support Pre-kindergarten through 8 grade math teachers. Patterson Park Public Charter selected Realized Curriculum Solutions based upon our experience with increasing the academic outcomes of underserved students through Leroy's experience at Oyster Adams Bilingual School as one of the co-facilitators of math innovation for students of color, neurodivergent learners, multilingual learners, and students from economically disadvantaged communities. Additionally, Patterson Park Public School made commitments to become a more inclusive learning environment for all students, all caregivers, and all staff members which is in alignment with the work Realized Curriculum Solutions does with our partners.
