This is not a trend—it's a necessary shift toward inclusive education and curriculum equity.
When evaluating the need for a culturally responsive curriculum, the most powerful information often comes from students themselves.
Ask yourself:
Do classroom texts and examples reflect your students’ cultural backgrounds?
Do your math and science lessons connect to real-life experiences?
Are neurodivergent thinking styles presented as strengths?
Do students see themselves as capable leaders and thinkers?
If the answer to any of these questions is unclear, it’s a signal your curriculum needs to evolve.
Educators inherit curriculum systems informed by Eurocentric norms, standardized learning models, and limited cultural representation. These systems were not designed with equitable instruction in mind, nor with the strengths of neurodivergent learners at the center.
But we are not obligated to accept the limitations of outdated materials.
Improving curriculum equity requires compassionate self-reflection:
Am I creating a learning space that fully honors my students?
Do I understand their identities deeply enough to teach in culturally relevant ways?
Am I willing to disrupt the status quo for the wellbeing of my students?
A shift toward inclusive, culturally grounded curriculum is not only possible—it is evidence-based and transformative.
Recognizing the need for change is step one. Step two is action.
